Transilvania Motorway crosses a medieval cemetery
July 27, 2010 - Romania Libera

Archaeologists have recently discovered a Gepid or an Avar necropolis during their archaeological clearance excavation works on the alignment where the second section of the Transilvania Motorway is to be built.
The 10 motorway kilometers will stretch between Câmpia Turzii and Turda and the archaeologists are currently doing investigation works in an extremely remnant-rich area where one of the motorway interchanges will be built. This area that the specialists have begun uncovering spreads over two-three hectares where there might be over a thousand tombs and a settlement, according to the estimates.

9th Century Tombs
According to the archaeological site lead, Cristi Roman, „the settlement dates back to the 9th century, but the tombs are not particularly rich as they have been plundered”. The archaeologists have found iron weapons, buckles or beads, in addition to relics and ceramics, but no highly valuable items.
When they complete the investigation works, the archaeologists hope they will, however, be able to put together an exhibition to display the more interesting items they are going to find.
The digging works in the area started ever since last year when several avar tombs dating back the 6th – the 7th century were found.
This is not first Gepid necropolis discovered on the Transilvania Motorway alignment. During the first archaeological investigations in the area of Săvădisla, carried out six years ago, tombs and dwellings from the 6th century and the Bronze Age were discovered.
