Autostrada Transilvania Factsheet

Autostrada Transilvania Project is a four-lane, 415-kilometer motorway, stretching northwest from Brasov in central Romania to Oradea on the country's border with Hungary.

The motorway will stretch southeast to northwest over the whole of Transylvania, passing by the following cities: Brasov, Fagaras, Sighisoara, Targu Mures, Cluj- Napoca, Zalau and Oradea. The alignment will start near Brasov, a city located at an altitude of almost 600 meters, will cross the Transylvanian plateau at an altitude of 300-400 m, then it will skirt to the north of Apuseni Carpathians, finally traversing the Crisanei plain at an altitude of approximately 130 m. The motorway will be sponsored and owned by the Government of Romania.

The motorway is being built by American company Bechtel International, Inc. together with his regional partner Enka Insaat ve Sanayi A.S. of Turkey. The two companies have teamed up for more than 20 years, earning a reputation as a classy partnership with motorway expertise. Autostrada Transilvania is Bechtel’s fourth motorway project with Enka.

Autostrada Transilvania is currently the largest motorway project in Europe. Upon completion, it will form an important section of the Romanian national motorway system, providing a vital connection with the rest of Europe. The construction of the motorway is particularly important for Romania's integration into the European economy, and will link the markets of Europe and Central Asia. Both during its construction and on its completion planned for 2013, the motorway will bring important economic benefits to Romania thanks to the joining to the European Union on January, 1st 2007.

For construction purposes, the Project is divided into eight segments. In June 2004, work started simultaneously on two segments - 2b Campia Turzii-Cluj Vest, and 3c Suplacu de Barcau-Bors.

Project policy is to maximize Romanian content in staffing, purchsing and subcontracting. The Project is merging international experience with local knowledge by hiring, training, and learning from Romanian staff - in positions ranging from management, to supervisors, to operators and craft labor. The Project actively solicits subcontractor and supplier interest in Romanian companies, and helps suppliers and subcontractors understand and achieve the expectations of providing high quality services on time and within budget.

Safety is a matter of central importance on the Project. The Project implements a rigorous 'zero accidents' safety philosophy, which requires all staff to follow strict working procedures to create a safe working environment.

Close cooperation with local communities and organizations is the key to the successful completion of the Project. The Project also applies world-class sustainable development work practices, ensures effective protection of the environment and develops the prudent use of natural resources.
